Tiffany & Co
Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young founded the company
in New York City in 1837. Their store was called “Tiffany, Young and Ellis” and
retailed an assortment of stationary products. In 1853, Charles took over the
business and shortened the name to Tiffany & Company. In 1867, Tiffany
& Co was the first US business to receive an award for the excellence in
silverware. In 1878, Tiffany won the gold medal for jewelry and silverware at
the Paris Exposition, which gave the company prestige.
In 2000, the Tiffany & Company Foundation was
established to provide grants to nonprofit organizations working in the areas
of the environment and the arts. In 2008, a collaboration between SoftBank, a
Japanese mobile phone operator, was announced. They designed a mobile phone,
which contains more than 400 diamonds, totaling more than 20 carats. The cost
of each phone is more than 100,000,000 yen.
